Backend Engineer, AI Agents at Afori
Founded by the creators of insurance unicorn wefox and backed by a €4M pre-seed from General Catalyst and Mustafa Suleyman, Afori is building the AI layer for the $200B insurance brokerage market to automate the manual back-office tasks that currently consume over 60% of a broker's day. As a Backend Engineer based in Barcelona, you will join an elite, high-velocity team shipping production-ready AI agents in your first weeks, owning features from inception to deployment without the friction of sprints, story points, or rigid specs while using coding agents as your default.

Role overview
Afori is an AI software platform built specifically for insurance brokers in Germany. It provides specialized AI agents that automate insurance back-office processes, structure incoming communication, and convert unstructured emails and documents into actionable, traceable cases. Rather than generating isolated text responses, Afori produces review-ready work results — structured cases with tasks and reminders, context-aware email drafts, and prefilled claim notifications. Afori was founded by Fabian Wesemann (CEO) and Sergi Baños (CTO), second-time founders with over ten years of experience in the insurance and technology sector. Both were early team members at wefox and bring deep expertise in brokerage processes, insurance regulation, and scalable product development.
What you will do
- Build and deploy AI agents using NodeJS and TypeScript that read policies, handle claims, and manage insurer correspondence autonomously.
- Develop and scale the underlying platform infrastructure to ensure every new agent is faster to build and more reliable than the last.
- Own product features end-to-end, moving from initial broker requirements to live production code while utilizing coding agents to maximize your output.
Who this is a fit for
- Proven experience shipping production software in NodeJS/TypeScript and a history of building projects or startups from the ground up.
- High-ownership mindset with the ability to navigate evolving requirements in an office-first Barcelona environment without needing formal ticket queues or specs.
- Proficient in using coding agents and LLM tools to delegate toil while maintaining sharp technical judgment and a focus on shipping what works.
Why this role is remarkable
- Work directly with founders who built wefox, an insurance unicorn, on a mission to close the €1.3 trillion global protection gap.
- Backed by tier-one investors like General Catalyst and visionaries including Mustafa Suleyman (CEO, Microsoft AI) and Alex Rinke (Co-CEO, Celonis).
- Join an elite, high-velocity team where you ship to production within weeks and influence the product without the friction of traditional sprints.
