Computational Scientist at Rivan Industries

Join the team that recently deployed the UK’s largest synthetic fuel plant and is now scaling 1000x to make fossil fuels obsolete. As a Computational Scientist, you will be the 'puppet master' of the physical world, using bits to move atoms by building the simulation infrastructure that underpins a generation-defining climate product. If you have 3-7 years of experience in process modelling and want to work at the intersection of Direct Air Capture and green hydrogen, this Bermondsey-based role offers a £70k-£80k salary plus a unique £6k annual housing subsidy to live near HQ.

Role overview

You will lead the development of high-fidelity process models to optimize a vertically integrated synthetic fuel system. By building simulations of Direct Air Capture and Sabatier reactors, you will act as the "puppet master" directing physical resources and identifying performance ceilings before they impact the 1000x scale-up mission.

Modular synthetic fuel plants11-50 employeesLondon, United KingdomSeed (VC-backed)

Rivan designs, manufactures and deploys synthetic fuel plants that produce the cheapest synthetic fuels on Earth.

Backed by Plural, 20VC, NFDG (Nat Friedman and Daniel Gross), Patrick Collison, John Collison.

What you will do

  • Develop and refine first-principles process models for lime-based Direct Air Capture, integrating complex thermodynamics and reaction kinetics.
  • Perform dynamic process simulations and mass transfer calculations to inform the design and operation of modular industrial plants.
  • Build and maintain custom simulation tools in Python or MATLAB to support critical techno-economic and performance assessments.

Who this is a fit for

  • 3–7 years of experience in process modelling or chemical engineering R&D with a Master’s or PhD in a related field.
  • Proven expertise in simulation software such as MATLAB, Aspen Plus, COMSOL, or Python-based physical modelling.
  • Strong background in heat transfer and reaction engineering, specifically regarding solid-gas systems like calcination and carbonation.
