As a Founding Engineer, you will build the AI agents replacing fragmented legacy systems in the massive food manufacturing sector. You'll move across the full stack—from engineering RAG systems for product catalogues to developing computer-use agents for complex compliance automation—directly impacting how food reaches tables across the US.
Founding Engineer at Fig AI
Food manufacturing is a $750B industry still running on pen and paper. As a Founding Engineer, you'll work directly with a pedigree team of Stanford MBAs and industry veterans to build RAG systems and computer-use agents that handle everything from complex compliance to sales discovery. If you're a pragmatic builder who wants to trade architectural debates for high-impact shipping and meaningful founding equity, this San Francisco-based role is your chance to own a massive vertical from day zero.
About this role
Role overview
About the company
AI agents for the food manufacturer’s ecosystem, 750b industry that is still running on emails, fragmented software, and pen and paper.
We firmly believe that food manufacturing is one of the least understood and largest opportunities for agents. We expect AGI to be able to do 90%+ of knowledge work in the next 3 years. We are earning trust with executives of the top U.S. food manufacturing business by deeply understanding their food specific workflows and building agents that do revenue generating actions and direct cost saving activities. This includes, but isn’t limited to:
- Finding potential sales opportunities using web scraping and semantic analysis
- Building a RAG system to make the manufacturer’s catalogue instantly discoverable
- Automate end-to-end compliance workflows by auto-ingesting emails, finding relevant documents to fill, completing them using computer-use agents or otherwise
- …..a lot more!!!
We come with a combined 10+ years of experience in the food industry, combined with multiple successful tech startups. And we’re pumped to bring a real, meaningful change to the world by helping people who bring food to our table 🥦
We’ve raised initial funding of $1.8M from Innovation Endeavors + food industry + technology angels at Instacart, OpenAI, and others to build this vision.
What you'll do
What you will do
- Design and deploy backend systems that ingest and process hundreds of PDFs from customer ERPs and CRMs using semantic analysis.
- Build and iterate on AI agents using Anthropic and Gemini to automate 100-page compliance documents and end-to-end sales workflows.
- Develop a performant, modern frontend and infrastructure using Kotlin, Spring Boot, React, and Terraform on GCP.
Who you are
Who this is a fit for
- A proven builder who has shipped real-world products and prioritizes pragmatism and speed over architectural purity.
- Highly autonomous engineer comfortable with "boring" proven tech like Kotlin and Postgres to solve complex, high-stakes industrial problems.
- San Francisco-based professional ready for a high-impact, hybrid role (3 days/week) with a strong bias toward shipping 80% solutions today.
Why this role
Why this role is remarkable
- Work directly with founders from Instacart, Bain, and Stanford who bring deep domain expertise from a 4th-generation food manufacturing family business.
- Massive market opportunity in a $750B industry still operating on pen and paper, with high-signal backing from Eric Schmidt's fund and industry leaders.
- True founding ownership with 0.5%–2% equity and the chance to shape every major technical and product decision from day zero.
