Role overview

As the first engineering hire at Cranston AI, you will own entire product surfaces end-to-end, from data models to AI agent behaviors. You’ll transform messy accounting workflows into durable software, working directly with the founders to scale a system already generating real revenue in a massive $900B underserved market.

Cranston AI is a full‑stack AI accounting firm that provides AI software and managed back‑office capacity for CPA firms and accounting teams. Its platform automates key accounting and tax workflows including tax preparation and review, bookkeeping, client requests and follow‑up, practice management, and broader financial analysis. Cranston connects to a firm’s existing systems of record and ingests data from company apps to handle repetitive accounting and compliance work, aiming to replace traditional accounting labor with autonomous AI systems supervised by licensed CPAs. The company focuses on running the back office for CPA firms and for startups and SMBs, helping them reduce accounting costs while increasing speed and accuracy in reconciliation, tax compliance, and ongoing accounting operations.

What you will do

  • Own and build core product workflows for tax prep, bookkeeping, and client operations using React, TypeScript, and PostgreSQL.
  • Design and implement sophisticated AI agent loops that understand accounting context and automate multi-step manual processes.
  • Translate complex real-world CPA firm requirements into clean product abstractions, interfaces, and durable workflow primitives.

Who this is a fit for

  • Proven experience shipping production-quality full-stack applications and turning ambiguous customer needs into functional, high-stakes software.
  • Fluency with modern AI coding tools and the ability to hold agent-generated output to an exceptionally high technical standard.
  • A high-agency, founder-level mentality with the technical range to navigate everything from infrastructure to user-facing interface design.

Why this role is remarkable

  • Join as the first engineer at a YC-backed company with $4M+ in funding and significant revenue traction within its first 60 days.
  • Work directly with experienced founders, including a technical leader from Databricks and an industry expert who previously managed a major accounting firm.
  • Shape the future of a $900B industry by building agentic AI that solves structural labor shortages and automates high-stakes professional services.
