Infrastructure Engineer at Extracellular

Extracellular is seeking a sole Infrastructure Engineer to own the technical backbone of their Bristol biotech labs. You'll run a modern on-prem stack—Linux, Docker, and MQTT—to ensure critical data flows from lab instruments to scientists developing sustainable cultivated meat and bio-materials. With no on-call rotations or corporate bureaucracy, this role offers total autonomy and direct impact on the future of ethical manufacturing. If you’re a Linux expert who thrives without a technical safety net and wants to see your code power real-world science, this is your next career move.

Role overview

You will own the technical backbone for a cutting-edge biotech laboratory, managing an on-prem stack of Linux hosts, Docker services, and MQTT data collection. As the sole infrastructure specialist, you’ll ensure scientific data flows reliably from lab instruments to the cloud, hardening systems and building observability without a technical safety net.

Extracellular is a UK-based bioprocessing partner and CDMO that supports the development, scale-up, and manufacturing of cell-based products for the sustainable bioeconomy. Its services include bioprocess development, media development, cell-line development, and contract manufacturing, with a focus on cultivated meat and seafood, plant-cell-culture foods, bio-cosmetics, bio-supplements, and other cell-based materials and ingredients.

What you will do

  • Maintain and extend a fleet of Linux edge devices and lab-floor collectors using infrastructure-as-code tools like Terraform and Ansible.
  • Own the end-to-end data platform, from MQTT collection off lab instruments to cloud time-series storage and PostgreSQL databases.
  • Implement rigorous backup, disaster recovery, and observability protocols to ensure critical research data is never lost and systems stay healthy.

Who this is a fit for

  • Proven experience (4+ years) running production infrastructure, with deep expertise in physical on-prem Linux systems and bare-metal service deployment.
  • Strong networking skills including VLANs, routing, and firewalls, with the ability to debug at the packet level using tools like tcpdump.
  • Hands-on proficiency with Docker Compose and scripting (Python or Go) to modify bespoke tools and manage version-controlled infrastructure.

Why this role is remarkable

  • True technical ownership: You are the sole infrastructure engineer with full autonomy over a modern on-prem stack and its future evolution.
  • Direct scientific impact: Your work directly enables the development of sustainable alternatives to current production methods like cultivated meat and ethical cosmetics.
  • No bureaucracy: Experience a high-trust environment with no on-call rotations, no complex change boards, and a direct line to the Head of R&D.
