Senior Research & Development Engineer at Omen AI

Omen AI is miniaturizing lab-grade spectroscopy into rugged, field-deployable sensors that protect the world's most critical infrastructure. If you thrive on 'type-two fun'—the kind of deeply challenging, fast-paced engineering that is immensely rewarding—this is your chance to build 100x better technology from the ground up. You'll bridge science and hardware, taking concepts from a whiteboard to benchtop rigs that prevent catastrophic failures in datacenters and industrial machines.

About this role

Role overview

Join a mission-driven team as our primary explorer, taking early-stage concepts from whiteboards to benchtop prototypes. You will push the physical limits of our optical and fluidic systems, validating new sensing modalities for industrial and datacenter environments. This role bridges the gap between fundamental science and field-ready hardware for massive infrastructure protection.

About the company

Data Centers Industrials1-50 employees

Omen (omen.ai) is blood monitoring for machines. We shrink lab-grade spectroscopy into embedded sensors for real-time, PPM-level fluid analysis—predicting catastrophic machine failures months in advance. Backed by CRV, Vanderbilt, and C-suites from GM, Bridgestone, and top data centers, Omen protects customers generating $150B in revenue and managing 14GW ($200B+) of critical infrastructure.

What you'll do

What you will do

  • Build and iterate early-stage benchtop rigs to validate core technology enhancements in optics, fluid handling, and plasma generation.
  • Investigate the physical limits of spectroscopy techniques, identifying why components like optical windows foul or plasma arcs destabilize.
  • Monitor state-of-the-art developments in fluid sensing and photonics to explore new modalities like bio-sensing, turbidity, or viscometry.

Who you are

Who this is a fit for

  • Possesses deep theoretical and practical knowledge in applied physics, optical engineering, or physical chemistry with a zero-to-one mentality.
  • Demonstrates strong proficiency in both ECAD and MCAD, specifically using Altium and Solidworks for integrated hardware design.
  • Practices first-principles problem-solving, preferring rapid prototyping and hypothesis testing over relying on standard off-the-shelf reference designs.

Why this role

Why this role is remarkable

  • Own fascinating hardware problems from the ground up, moving from first-principles physics to working prototypes for real-world infrastructure protection.
  • Join a high-performance $10.5M seed-funded team of builders and industry veterans who prioritize fast-paced engineering and zero red tape.
  • Develop 100x better technology that detects catastrophic industrial failures months in advance using proprietary miniaturized lab-grade spectroscopy.
