Lead the development and application of advanced crop transformation and genome editing methods. You will bridge the gap between machine learning predictions and biological reality by validating gene targets in planta. This hands-on wet-lab role is essential for delivering the biological assets that power the next generation of agriculture.
Crop Transformation Scientist at Biographica
Join Biographica, a £7M seed-funded biotech at the intersection of machine learning and plant biology. As a Crop Transformation Scientist based at the historic Rothamsted research site, you will lead the validation of AI-predicted gene targets, bridging the gap between computational models and real-world agricultural traits. We partner with global leaders like BASF | Nunhems to deliver better crops faster. If you have deep expertise in tissue culture, CRISPR, and molecular cloning, this is your chance to shape the future of sustainable agriculture within a high-growth, mission-driven team of 17 experts.

Role overview
Biographica is a London agricultural biotechnology company. We work out which genes control valuable crop traits, and design the DNA edits that move them.
Improving a crop trait takes years, and most candidate targets never validate. Every failed validation cycle costs a breeding season, and money cannot buy a season back. We train our own models on large-scale, multi-species genomic data to find causal targets rather than correlated ones, design the cis-regulatory edits to realise them, and te
What you will do
- Design and execute complex experiments for gene target validation in planta across Biographica’s diverse crop portfolio.
- Establish and optimize genetic transformation and genome editing methodologies, including both tissue culture-based and tissue culture-free approaches.
- Conduct high-throughput molecular genotyping and assemble DNA constructs to ensure rapid and accurate validation of edited lines.
Who this is a fit for
- Holds a PhD or BSc in Plant Biology or Biotechnology with extensive hands-on experience in crop tissue culture and genetic transformation.
- Demonstrates high proficiency in DNA vector design and molecular cloning, along with experience in high-throughput molecular analysis of transgenic plants.
- Possesses the communication skills to translate experimental findings for a multidisciplinary team of machine learning engineers and bioinformaticians.
Why this role is remarkable
- Work at the cutting edge of agriculture by validating high-confidence gene targets generated by Biographica’s proprietary, interpretable machine learning models.
- Join a growing team of 17 experts recently backed by a £7M seed round and partnered with industry giants like BASF | Nunhems.
- Take full ownership of the wet-lab transformation pipeline, transitioning computational insights into tangible biological assets with real-world impact on global food security.
