Role overview

Leverage your STEM background to protect cutting-edge innovations in neurosymbolic AI, quantum computing, and biotech. You will bypass traditional multi-year law school routes through an accelerated SQE pathway, training directly under world-leading IP strategists to draft patents and structure complex licensing deals for VC-backed startups and global tech giants.

Legal Services

ORIGIN LIMITED is an IP law firm focussing on disruptive high tech UK and European companies; it is building a new team which will operate AI-first; this team will be the future of the law firm. A pathway to qualifying as a solicitor (without the need for 2 years at law school) and/or a patent attorney is offered. Origin is regulated by the SRA and is 100% employee owned; the firm is unconventional by law firm standards. It has had an inside track on many of the most interesting technologies - current IP projects cover neurosymbolic AI, computer vision, robotic manufacturing, graphene-based biosensors, quantum transduction and more.

What you will do

  • Collaborate directly with inventors and founders to identify, draft, and protect patents for breakthrough technologies across multiple scientific sectors.
  • Develop comprehensive IP strategies and handle complex commercial agreements, including high-value licensing deals with global pharmaceutical and tech companies.
  • Help lead the firm’s transition into an AI-first practice, utilizing and building new tools to reshape how legal services are delivered.

Who this is a fit for

  • Holds a PhD or a first-class/2:1 STEM degree in Physics, Engineering, Computer Science, or Biotech from a top-tier university.
  • Demonstrates intense curiosity about cross-disciplinary technology and a desire to understand the commercial context behind scientific innovation.
  • Possesses exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to articulate complex technical and legal concepts to founders, inventors, and technical teams.

Why this role is remarkable

  • Skip the traditional two-year law school and multi-seat training contract for an accelerated, supported SQE pathway to qualification as a solicitor.
  • Join a 100% employee-owned firm that rejects billable hours in favor of fixed fees, creativity, and direct mentorship from a world-leading IP strategist.
  • Work at the absolute frontier of technology, advising disruptive VC-backed startups and major players like ARM and TikTok on their most critical IP assets.
