Senior Electrical Design Engineer at Rivan IndustriesVC-backed synthetic fuel startup

Rivan Industries is on a mission to make synthetic fuel cheaper than fossil fuels, and they need a Senior Electrical Design Engineer to own the power architecture of their massive modular plants. Backed by a £10M seed round from Plural and the founders of Stripe, this role offers the rare chance to build and commission industrial-scale hardware in weeks, not years. If you have 5+ years of experience in industrial power systems and want to lead the electrical design for the UK's most ambitious decarbonisation project, this is your opportunity to claim a seat at the table with significant equity and a high-performance engineering team.

Overview

Why this role stands out

You will own the AC power system architecture for the UK's largest synthetic fuel plants, translating complex requirements into certifiable industrial designs. By eliminating bottlenecks in power and control systems, you’ll enable Rivan to scale their decarbonisation technology 1000x, playing a critical role in making synthetic fuels cheaper than fossil fuels.

Rivan Industries - VC-backed synthetic fuel startup

Responsibilities

What you will do

  • Take full ownership of AC power architecture, including distribution, protection strategies, and panel designs for modular DAC and electrolyser systems.
  • Lead panel certification activities under Machinery and Low Voltage Directives (CE/UKCA) while contributing to safety systems via HAZOPs and FMEAs.
  • Mentor a growing team of mid-career and junior engineers while iterating on pilot plant designs to optimize for cost and manufacturability at scale.

Candidate profile

Who this is a fit for

  • 5+ years of industrial electrical design experience focusing on power systems, industrial machinery, or complex process environments.
  • Proficiency in electrical CAD tools such as Solidworks Electrical, EPLAN, or AutoCAD for producing full architecture schematics and cable sizing.
  • Strong background in functional safety standards (IEC 61508) and experience with industrial power conversion systems like VFDs, rectifiers, or high-power DC.

What makes it remarkable

Why this role is remarkable

  • Lead the electrical architecture for the UK's largest synthetic fuel plant with the autonomy to design systems from first principles rather than following legacy specs.
  • Join a high-growth team backed by a £10M seed round from Plural, Nat Friedman, and the Stripe founders, with validated commercial demand and signed offtaker agreements.
  • Benefit from a mission-driven culture offering significant early-team equity, unlimited time off, and a unique £6,000/year stipend to live close to the London HQ.
