AI Engineer at Lichenai

Location
Cambridge, United Kingdom

Not Disclosed

Join Lichenai as their first AI Engineer and build the future of enterprise insight. Working alongside CTO Catherine Breslin (who led speech science for Amazon Alexa), you'll own the LLM agent layer and voice interviewer infrastructure for a 4-person, pre-seed team in Cambridge.

This is a rare founding role where you'll design adaptive conversational agents and data pipelines that capture human tacit knowledge at scale. With enterprise customers already in production, you’ll have immediate impact on a platform turning voice interviews into evidence-backed business requirements.

Role overview

Join Lichenai as the first AI Engineer, shaping the core LLM agent layer and data pipeline for voice-led enterprise insights. You will design conversational voice interviewers and analysis agents that transform human tacit knowledge into evidence-backed requirements. Working directly with speech AI expert CTO Catherine Breslin, you’ll drive technical architecture from prototype to production.

About Lichenai

Lichenai is a pre-seed Cambridge AI startup building a voice-led interview platform to capture and amplify human insight. Led by CEO Tabitha (co-founder of CogX) and CTO Catherine Breslin (who led speech science for Amazon Alexa), Lichenai uses adaptive AI to turn enterprise conversations into structured business requirements.

Open roles at Lichenai

What you will do

  • Own the end-to-end LLM agent layer, building text agents for research setup, transcript analysis, and automated report generation.
  • Design the conversational logic and voice infrastructure for the interviewer agent, optimizing for latency, turn-taking, and natural human interaction.
  • Build robust data architecture and evaluation/observability tooling to ensure the accuracy and reliability of agent-generated insights at scale.

Who this is a fit for

  • Hands-on expertise building production systems with Python and LLM APIs, including experience with agent frameworks, tool use, and RAG systems.
  • Proven ability to design evaluations for non-deterministic AI systems and build data pipelines for processing large-scale unstructured transcripts.
  • Background in speech AI, computational linguistics, or real-time voice (STT/TTS) is highly preferred, alongside a desire for a fast-paced, high-autonomy startup environment.

Why this role is remarkable

  • Founding-engineer scope on a 4-person team, directly shaping technical architecture and engineering culture alongside a CTO who led science for Amazon Alexa before the product launched.
  • Solve a high-value enterprise problem by moving beyond shallow surveys to capture and amplify human insight through sophisticated, adaptive voice AI interviews.
  • Join a pre-seed stage venture that has already moved from prototype to production with enterprise customers, offering meaningful equity and high technical autonomy.
