Role overview
As a Senior Backend Engineer on the Core Discovery team, you will lead the development of location-based services and search infrastructure. You’ll own the Maps and Directory surfaces end-to-end, building scalable geospatial systems using Node.js and TypeScript. This role is pivotal in helping Raya members discover people and experiences around them.

Raya is a private, membership-based social networking and dating application, primarily for iOS, that operates as an exclusive community for people in creative and related industries. The platform began as a dating app but has expanded to support professional networking, social discovery, and community-building, allowing members to connect for romantic relationships, friendships, and work collaborations.
What you will do
- Architect and lead the development of Core Discovery services, specifically focusing on geo-indexing, proximity queries, and mapping surfaces.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams of UX designers and data scientists to deliver intuitive, user-focused search and discovery experiences.
- Navigate the full SDLC to ensure operational excellence, implementing CI/CD practices and scalable system designs in a fast-moving environment.
Who this is a fit for
- Has 6+ years of backend experience with a proven track record of shipping scalable production systems using Node.js and TypeScript.
- Possesses deep expertise in geospatial data and location-based systems, including experience with geo-indexing and proximity-based queries.
- Demonstrates strong data fundamentals with PostgreSQL, MongoDB, and search infrastructure like Elasticsearch or OpenSearch for consumer-facing products.
